Understanding your sober time
Sobriety calculator FAQs
How does the sobriety calculator work?
Enter the local date and time when your sobriety began. The calculator compares that moment with the current time and displays the completed years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds, updating live every second.
Which date should I use as my sobriety date?
Use the date that feels accurate and meaningful for your recovery—commonly the first full day without alcohol or another substance, or the precise time you made your commitment. If you follow a fellowship or treatment programme, you may prefer the date you already recognise there.
Does the calculation account for leap years and different month lengths?
Yes. Years and months are calculated as calendar periods rather than treating every month as a fixed number of days. The calculator also respects the date and time in your browser's local time zone.
Why might this result differ from another sobriety counter?
Counters can differ because some count the starting day as day one, round partial days, use UTC instead of local time or treat months as a fixed 30 days. This calculator shows completed elapsed time from the exact local date and time you enter.
Is my sobriety date private?
The date is saved only in local storage within your browser so it remains available on your next visit. This web calculator does not submit the date to us. Clearing your browser data or selecting Reset Calculator removes the locally stored date.
What are common sobriety milestones?
Many people recognise 24 hours, one week, 30, 60 and 90 days, six months and yearly anniversaries. Milestones can be powerful reminders of progress, but there is no wrong milestone—getting through today is meaningful too.
What should I do if I need to reset my sobriety date?
A reset does not erase what you learned or the progress you made. Choose Edit or Reset Calculator, enter the new date and continue one day at a time. If you are struggling, consider reaching out to a trusted person, recovery group or qualified professional.
Is a sobriety calculator a substitute for recovery support?
No. A counter can provide motivation and perspective, but it is not medical care, counselling or emergency support. Seek appropriate professional or emergency help if you are worried about withdrawal, relapse, your safety or someone else's safety.
